If it’s FREE it’s gotta’ be good! Right?

We moved into our house four years ago in September. That January we had tons of rain and lots of flooding. We were so lucky, we had raw sewage come up the shower drain in our basement. I am so glad the previous owners were honest with us when they signed those disclosure papers. It happened two more times that Spring. I called the city and reported it each time and they took a report. Then the city began offering FREE backlflow preventers and sub pumps for those that called at least three times in the previous six months. Bingo, that was us! The city was going to fix our problem for FREE!
So, we signed papers thanking the city for digging a hole to China, installing a pipe blockade going both into our house and out of our house and then covering it up with a man hole and hooking it up to a beeping alarm. We promised we would never call them again.

Fast forward to today. It has been raining, not drizzling, but steady rain for the last two days. Yards, tree lawns, streets basements are flooded. The girls had quite a time wading in the flood waters behind our house. The photo is taken in a neighbors back yard-not a pond! At one point Molly had to comb the bottom of the hugely, deep puddle for Ginger’s boot.

But really it all started late last night. The beeping and the flashing. The alarm sounded to remind us that the backflow preventer was working.

It was blocking all water from entering our pipes, and preventing all water from leaving our house as well. See, the city, they fixed our problem! For FREE I might add. So when it rains really hard and the aged, decreped, broken down, crumbling sewer system of this fair city can’t handle the flow-my FREE backflow preventer does its job! Yes, there is a plan to sleeve those storm sewers so they can handle all of our communities water that flows directly to the front of my house. But there are no gurantees that that will totally fix the problem but we are told it should help. Now remember-I signed on the dotted line that I would never call the city with this problem again. So essentially-when it rains we are screwed!

But since Dawn hasn’t installed that widget for me yet, I will show the only shot of mellowing I can, since the rest of them are gross with tons of TP and poo!!!!!!!

Very helpful in your city. I thought the best things in life were free, perhaps not. :)
