Newspaper Hut

The theme for the Unplugged Project for this week is newspaper.  I remembered seeing a structure made out of newspaper and saved the instructions for “some day”.  Well today was that some day.

I just so happened to have this past weeks newspapers and the paper leftover from the garage sale.  Good thing because this project uses ALOT of newspapers.  Also, you will need tape, a pencil, stapler, a sheet is optional.

First lay 4 sheets of newspaper on top of each other.  Place the pencil in the corner and roll the 4 sheets diagonally to make a tube.

IMG_7797 IMG_7800

Tape the middle and let pencil slide out of tube.  Repeat 25 times.  The 25 tubes should be close to the same length-trim if you need to.

IMG_7796

Use 3 tubes to make a triangle and staple at each corner.  Repeat until you have 5 triangles.

IMG_7804

Connect the triangles in a long line, staple together.

IMG_7805 Use tubes across the top and staple in place.

Get help!  Stand the triangles up and staple the two ends together.  Add a tube to the last top spot.

IMG_7811

Use the 5 remaining tubes to make a star stapled in the middle.

This is the roof. Staple in place.IMG_7819

A sheet or other light weight material can cover your hut if you want.    Get inside and play!!!!

  1. ooh, we made these at work MANY years ago. Elliott will adore this. Thanks!

  2. Wow that is amazing – you did a great job!

  3. Love this! My girls have done this at preschool a couple times and it’s always a huge hit with the kids. Of course, they did more of a free-form building! :) I like it with the sheet draped over — way fun. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I remember seeing this online somewhere too. Looks like a lot of work, but like it was a lot of fun. Great job!

  5. Oh that is way to cool, my kiddos will love it…have to buy the weekend paper, it’s huge!

  6. That is a very impressive project. My son would have loved this one. Wish I had thought of it!

  7. UH-MAY-ZING.

I have this dream. I have a dream that one day, here in Columbus, OH, we’ll have a children’s museum like City Museum in St. Louis, MO. You will be in charge of the education department. That is my dream.

  8. That is so cool. I am definitely putting that in the pile for our summer activities (where we live it can be too hot midday to play outside)

  9. Really cool project!!!! I think we will try this one. What fun! Thanks for sharing.

  10. Wow! Totally new to me…and VERY impressive! Thanks for joining in and sharing this great idea!

  11. I love this idea!

  12. Gr8 job.

  13. This is wonderful and is absolutely going in my own someday file. Wonderful.

I am not sure if I have left you a comment or not, but have been enjoying your blog for a few weeks now. It is quite inspirational.

  14. I love your follow through and attention to detail. Your kids are having a truly magincal childhood.

  15. THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS—–this is really a fairly easy project and it only took us about an hour. Then the girls fought in it, err, I mean played in it all afternoon!

  16. This looks like SO much fun, I can’t wait for us to make it. I’ll have to make sure it’s big enough for me to get into, too. Very cool!

  17. That’s fantastic. Great “green” idea. Can’t wait to try this with my niece.

  18. that’s too awesome, i wish i could’ve figured that out when i was a kid.

  19. I love this project! What a great way to teach early math concepts or just have fun! I linked to your newspaper hut from today’s blog entry on my site. I know the readers will love it!

  20. I came to get a rainy day idea for the kids while I’m at working. I need to go rob the newspapers from the neighbor’s house. But, since I don’t have food coloring, this is do-able! Thanks!

  21. ANN LOGSDON—Thanks!!

  22. We did it! Thank you so much for putting this idea up. It wasn’t that much work at all and the kids love it!

  24. Oh I remember doing this at school

  25. We’ve done this some 12 years ago when our eldest was 2 and we lived in a house with a spacious flooring. It did not last to have the “sides” to cover the “building” but the kid really had so much fun coming in and out of the triangles like she was going through an obstacle course. :)

  26. What an excellent project! Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. Woah I had no idea newspaper could be so structural. Judging from the comments it sounds like I’m the last in on this fun idea. Thank you for sharing! And that last photo is absolute magic :)

  37. Hi,
We just made your newspaper hut for one of our lessons (we homeschool). I was hoping you would give me permission to use the next to last photo in your post for my blog. I was intending to use the pics of our hut, but one kid plus 3 dogs equals a collapsed hut, so unortunately I did not get a pic before the wrecking crew had their little party. I will link to your post for instructions.

    Many thanks, Jenn

BTW, my daughter absolutely loved making it. Thanks for the tute.

  38. We made this awesome paper hut creation! It was much easier than it looks! The kids had a great time with it. I love the fact that it was quick to do and FREE!

I will be posting about it on my blog and will leave a link to your tutorial!

    Thanks for the fun!

  39. Well, now I have a reason to go out and buy a newspaper!! This is WONDERFUL, teaches kids about good construction, and doesn’t cost a thing! Well, maybe 50 cents in my case.

I’ve featured this on my blog today, hope you don’t mind! I also have a “I’ve been featured” button if you’d like!

    GREAT post! Love love love!!

  40. what a great idea! I can’t wait to try this out with my daughter. :)

Thanks for the tutorial. We made this tonight and it was fun fun fun. For whatever reason ours wasn’t very sturdy but that just added to the fun factor. The boys enjoyed running in and out waiting to see who it would collapse on, then pretend they were being rescued. Thanks again, we will try building it again to see if we can make it sturdier, and then figure out how to make it collapse again, aaahhh boys will be boys : )

    Hi,
I’m a Family Home Daycare Provider always looking for clever ideas. My husband and I are waiting to adopt, hopefully soon! Nice blog!

  43. My son is going to flip when he hears about this idea! He’s constantly making forts in my living room. I love how simple it is! I can literally hand my big kids a stack of newspaper and a stapler and let their imaginations take over. It’ll be so fun to see what they come up with.

Thanks so much for sharing your brilliance! I can’t wait to pass it on to my readers on MeckMom.com.

  44. MeckMom—Thanks! Hope you guys have fun!!

  45. Amazing Apr 29th 2011

Amazing. I’m so using this for my future sleepover. Lol.

  46. I made one of these with my class of children at school from garden canes and gaffer tape – we’re keeping it on the field as a den!

  47. Lauren Jun 12th 2011

I live in a sharehouse of 5 people, average age 24 and this ‘fort’ is where we will be eating our dinner tonight!

    Such a fantastic idea!

  48. I think this is the most wonderful idea – filing it away for a snow day next winter!!!
    So cool.

Great idea no one has mentioned that YOU alone may be the only one able to roll the newspapers tight enough and it takes a WHILE to roll 25 I’m talking an hour easy! Plus you will get dirty hands.
Overall it’s worth it though…next time I may just roll the papers the night before and assemble it w/my kiddos the next day!
