Butterflies and Mobiles
Yesterday we made our annual pilgrimage to see The Butterfly Exhibit at The Conservatory. There were amazing moths and butterflies fluttering everywhere.
The girls were sure they could “save” this one!
A group of friends came back to our house for a little butterfly craftn’.
We made these mobiles out of pipe cleaners and roving.
The idea came from the book by Sue Pearl called MAKING FELTED FRIENDS
List of Materials:
pipe cleaners, bits of brightly colored roving(wool), dowel rod or stick, needle and thread.
First make a “balloon on a stick” with one of the pipe cleaners.
Do the same with the bottom of that same pipe cleaner.
Make a second set of wings.
Now to make the body; fold another pipe cleaner in half.
Now fold that same piece into thirds, with the top open third being the antennae.
Wrap another pipe cleaner around the body. Now take one set of your wings and wrap pieces of the roving around each of the wings.
After both sets of wings are wrapped, wrap the body and then lay them in their order on a table.
Now take a bit more roving and wrap the body to the wings.
You can make seveal butterflies and hang them on a stick or dowel rod. We made a few notches in our rods.
Use a needle and thread to hang the butterflies from the rod.
Hang them up and enjoy!
