Today was the perfect day for this:
and some of this:
and a bit of this:
and some of this:
and more of this:
And some homemade soft pretzels!
We followed a recipe that promised Aunt Annies Pretzels-like from the mall. They weren’t exactly Aunt Annies but not too bad either. I used white whole wheat flour for ours-white flour definitely would have been better. Ours were really heavy. And as far s the amount this recipe makes-unless you are feeding an army cut this recipe in half as this makes at least a dozen pretzels and they don’t save well.
Aunt Annies Soft Pretzel Recipe
In a large bowl combine 1 1/2 tsp live active yeast with 1 1/2 cups 110 degree water, 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar and dash of salt. Let sit 5 minutes
Add 4 cups flour mix well and knead for 5 minutes
Put in greased bowl and cover with damp towel and let sit 1 hour in a warm place.
Divide into 8 to 12 pieces -we divided into 16 pieces-and they were still pretty thick.
Roll into rope and shape , dip into 1/4 cup warm water that has 1 tablespoon baking soda mixed in.
Bake at 500 degrees for 8 minutes
Brush liberally with melted butter and sprinkle with kosher salt or 2 tablespoons mixed with melted butter and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar or parmesan cheese and garlic salt and serve with marinara sauce.
Mmmmmmmm!

Mmmmm….. I adore soft pretzles.
Oh those look so yummy……. I think I’m going to go make some. Right. Now. Oh yes.
We love pretzel days, you’re making me hungry.
We’ll do a variety with dips: Parmesan with marinara, Salty with honey mustard, cinnamon with frosting dip, Jalapeno with cheesy salsa.
Ok can you tell I’m on a diet?? lol
Looks like a wonderful day; the farmer’s market, too
those look amazing. we’ll have to try them. i wonder if they’d freeze ok? beautiful veggies up in your farmer’s market post, too!!
What a fun idea – and a great kid project! Plus, very easy to veganize depending on the toppings!
I can’t wait to try these!
I converted an Auntie Anne’s copycat recipe to a bread machine recipe and blogged about it here:

I thought this recipe tasted a lot like Auntie Anne’s. It uses powdered sugar and I think that is the difference. Yours look really good, too. I like a heavier pretzel – good for dipping in some spicy mustard!
oh those look so yummy I’m going to have to try those soon!
I’m a complete yeast bread novice but I’m dying to try this recipe. How do I get 110 degree water – I mean how do I take it’s temp
A candy thermometer?
Thanks!
KATY—-That is exactly what I used-a candy thermometer! Good luck.
just finished ‘em. nummy!! i’ll post soon!
thanks,

So glad I came across your blog. Makes me smile!
I love your blog. I am hooked on making these pretzels now, and even use them to make ‘pretzel dogs’ similar to pgs in a blanket. And about the 110 degree water, I just make mine warm, but not HOT so the yeast like it!
