I've done this sort of project with my students and I use the tooling foil from dickblick.com. It's heavy enough to hold the design but isn't thick enough to cut little fingers. I like how you strung a few squares together--my students did a similar thing and used colored paper clips to connect the squares (Modern Day Adinkra cloths). If the edges are sharp on the foil squares, you could have kids use duct tape on the edges. Love this--I'm going to have to try it! Thanks for posting! Beautiful!
