Monkey Balls

I think most people call these Monkey Brains, but for some odd reason I always called them Monkey Balls.  I know, I am “special” like that!

Really these are the fruit from an Osage Orange tree.  I love the smell of these…most people don’t.  In olden times they were used to keep spiders away.  You are supposed to put them in corners as a spider repellent.

We used them for something else.

I raided my husbands work bench for some supplies.

I gave them each a small hammer…and this is what they created:

This one reminds me of Shrek!

  4. where did you find them? I always got mine from where Chipoltle is now. I love to set them on the table with pomegranates for a harvest centerpiece.

  5. What a great craft idea! I grew up calling these hedge apples – we have several trees in the back yard. When my daughter gets a bit older, I’ll have to remember this! :)

  6. My grandparents always called these “horse apples.” They called the tree “Bodark.” It has beautiful orange, hard wood that is difficult to work, but really gorgeous.

I’ve heard people around here call them “hedge apples.” Not sure why.

We always threw them at each other as kids. I think my grandmother would slice them and dry them and make pretty little flower doodads with them — you know, glue them on a board and add other nature pretties to them. I’ve never seen them used this way, but it looks like fun!

  7. We always called them monkey balls too, and there was one next to my playground when I was in grade school. We used to throw them at each other. Great activity!

  8. These are darling! They’re always in our grocery stores this time of year but I never minded spiders so I’ve never picked any up. My kids would love this. What a fun idea!
