Taffy and Whine
Sometimes, it seems, life has a way of sucking you in and swallowing you whole. Sometimes the laundry pile never seems to go down, nor do the dishes or the continuous dog pee puddles, the endless cries for “Mom!” the errands and play dates. But somehow you get up and trudge through another day until you finally get caught up or if your lucky, ahead of the game. Some how you seem to float by for a few days or even weeks before it all piles up to the ceiling again! That sums up my last few days. With Jake out of commission I realize just how much he does around here to help and I am feeling swamped without him!
But we have managed some fun in between all of my crabbing this week.
A trip to The OSU Museum of Biological Diversity
Of course the making of Valentines
And we tried our hand at a taffy pull!
1 1/4 cups light brown sugar, 2 T white vinegar, 2 T butter
Stir and bring to a boil until it reaches 270 degrees. Add 1/2 t vanilla (or more!)
Then pour it out onto a greased pan or tray to cool for 5 minutes
If you poke your finger in the center and the indent stays you know it’s ready
Grease your hands well
Form it into a ball-it will still be hot so be careful! stretch taffy out back and forth and re stretching trying to not let it break.
We tried twice and the taffy got hard both times-We probably cooked it a tiny bit too long. But it was fun and still tasted pretty good. It resembled the middle of a tootsie pop.

And that is a serious jug of glue!
I, too, have a never-ending laundry pile. I also have a sinkful of dirty dishes that I’m pretending aren’t there, and a sticky kitchen floor. Bleh.
Did your kids stay up late playing another round of Candyland Live after the sugar buzz from that yummy taffy?
That museum looks so cool. I wish I lived closer to a museum like that.
I’d love to try that taffy some time. What a cool idea. They used to make it at the heritage town I lived in, but it seemed a lot more complicated. I like your kitchen style instructions! Thanks!!
