Our Holiday was wonderful. Mostly because everyone was home and together for three whole days. That doesn’t seem to happen as much as kids get older and husbands work more!

Here are a few highlights of the weekend.

We always go to my Mom’s for Christmas eve. She cooks delicious things and makes everything pretty just for us! This year she surprised Ginger with a karaoke machine! And a Hannah Montana CD…. Oh boy! Does she LOVE it!

Molly asked “how early can we wake you up?” Joe told her 5 AM…guess what time she woke us?

We are pretty good about sticking to the kids lists. Buying them things they want and not as much stuff that I think they should have. Yet there are always a few surprises thrown in. This year I hit a home run with my surprise for Molly!!

Bento boxes for her and Ginger along with a Bento cookbook and all the little tools and treasures. The perfect gift for my little Martha in the making!

It didn’t matter that we just had a huge breakfast, she couldn’t wait to get to work making lunch!

One of our other Christmas traditions is Molly’s Christmas day cake. This year she made a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting from scratch. Look out Cake Boss!

I LOVE the week between Christmas and New Years. I feel like I can breath a sigh of relief and just enjoy. I wrote all about it last year too.

We are anxiously waiting for a friend to arrive in a few hours to stay with us for the week along with a cousin who will also be visiting. We are looking forward to some sledding today before the snow melts, a trip to the movies and the zoo to see holiday lights, sushi and chocolate fondue with friends. It will be a stay-cation around here and I am loving it!! Hope your week between is filled with more holiday joy!

Molly and her circus friends performed Saturday afternoon at ComFest. It was super hot!! ComFest takes place over three days. For so many it is the three days they look forward to all year. My son and his friends included. Our house is close to the bus that runs down to the park so we have had kids, many kids staying here this weekend. I am tired and looking forward to a quiet day tomorrow!

Where to start?! The media is, well the media. They are a business. They feature stories that will boost ratings. They use shock value to stir up attention and in turn receive more viewers.

So why we are surprised by both the Good Morning America and the Discovery Health reports on Unschooling? They are typical examples of biased reporting. Both were short segments filled more with shock value than facts and true glimpses into real unschooling.

Mainstream America just doesn’t get Unschooling. They aren’t going to. For heavens sake only about 25% of American adults have a face book account. I thought everybody was on face book! So imagine how the majority of the world could possibly understand Unschooling? Especially with the shows that Discovery Health and Good Morning America put out. Yet, it is so easy for me to forget that we are radical. It is so easy for me to forget that my family is so different than almost everybody else.

Partly because I don’t reflect the mainstream and haven’t for so long. I have my own fairly large community that I identify with. I belong to a food co-op and rarely shop at Kroger and I love my public radio station where they don’t play anything you have ever heard of. —–That’s weird…… Yeah, I guess. I recycle, compost, use cloth napkins, shop at the thrift store and line dry my clothes—-Oh, your one of those hippies!….. OK. My kids don’t go school—-Oh, you homeschool? Will you always do that? Do they socialize with other kids? ……No,we Unschool—— Huh?????? Like those crazy people on TV? Did you see that, they let their kids eat donuts for breakfast—– That is main steam media for you!

I don’t sit round and think about how different we are. We just live. We aren’t purposeful in every move we make. We aren’t living for “the unschooling movement.” We don’t look different. We don’t walk or talk differently. (well maybe a little differently ) Our daily life is pretty uneventful to the outside world. We get up and go about our day just like everyone else. Only we have learned a little secret that seems so unfathomable to the rest of the world. Choice

We all have them. Really we do have choices in everything we do. Yes, some choices make life harder than others but we have choices in life. And as Unschoolers we have made many, many unpopular choices.

Kids don’t have to go to school–gasp! They don’t have to get up at a certain time of day to be productive—gasp! They don’t even have to be told to learn! No, really, it’s just automatic. Adults may think they have control over what kids are leaning but kids and adults everywhere are learning ALL THE TIME!

I googled learning and Wikipedia gave me this: (from a very mainstream source even!)

Learning is a process you do, not a process that is done to you. Traditional education focuses on teaching, not learning. It incorrectly assumes that for every ounce of teaching there is an ounce of learning by those who are taught. However, most of what we learn before, during, and after attending schools is learned without it being taught to us. A child learns such fundamental things as how to walk, talk, eat, dress, and so on without being taught these things. Adults learn most of what they use at work or at leisure while at work or leisure. Most of what is taught in classroom settings is forgotten, and much or what is remembered is irrelevant

These choices we have made are hard. And Unschooling is a journey of sorts. The vast majority of unschoolers did not wake up one day and decide to make all of these radical choices in one day. But it is easy to forget that.

Beginning with following your heart and letting go of what other people think. It’s your life –who care’s what other people think. Really–let that go and be the real you. We only have one this one life to live. Live it the way you want to.

Then giving up the ” should do’s” and the “have to’s”. Really question why you are doing things. Do you really want to? Or are you just doing them because you should do them? What will really happen if you don’t do them? Can you live with that result? Can you make a different choice to get the end result you want? Then make your decision based on that. It is a process. These choices we have made seem so normal and automatic to us now that sometimes we forget how the other 99% of the world is living. There really are so few have to’s in our lives but we assume that we must do way too many of them. Don’t follow blindly. I want to make my life just what I want it to be. And fill it with what I want. You can to. You have a choice.

So to the outside world our life may seem uneventful but really it’s just the opposite. Really we are choosing to exercise our choices. We aren’t living lives full of have to’s. We are living fully everyday. Not just on the weekends or when we go on vacation. Not just when we have time. And you can too. You have a choice–to put your kids in school or homeschool or really trust yourself and live your one life freely and Unschool.

He was Awesome!!! Dawn has a great video of him speaking.

I also shook hands and looked deep into the eyes of Luke Perry of 90210 fame. Let me tell you, he looks even better in person!!!! Abby has a video of him talking to our kids and well, me gushing over 90210 because my husband was with us and I couldn’t really say, “I love you” to him. Just kidding.

A few more highlights of the afternoon:

The Unplugged theme for this week was cylinder. We used cylinder shaped mailing tubes to make rain sticks.

You can also use paper towel tubes or wrapping paper tubes. You get it-just about any tube that is at least as long as a paper towel tube. You will also need some nails, a hammer, paint, super glue or wax paper or cellophane and rubber bands and some rice.

First we painted our tubes

after the paint was dry we pounded small nails into the tubes

I suggest using nails with a small head for easier pounding. Use lots of nails and stagger them around the tube. I had to get them started for my 4 year old and then she finished pounding them in.

Next we added some rice to the tube-if you have a tube with end pieces you can just take one off to add the rice, otherwise you will have to make an end with several pieces of wax paper and a rubber band.

You can add as much or as little rice as you want. Ginger added about 1 to 1 1/2 cups to hers and was happy. Molly added her rice then put the top back on to flip it gently to listen to it and then took most of her rice out only to add some of it back in.

After we finished we decided it would have been better to pound the nails and then paint them so we cold have painted over the nails. Next time. They sound so nice-like rain falling!

You can read a little history behind rain sticks and even purchase one here.

Last night a few fellow, Columbus bloggers (her, her and her) and I attended a shindig put on by Experience Columbus.

It was fun to meet some new people as well as catch up with some ladies (her, her, her) I haven’t seen in a while. (Sorry if I caught up with you and didn’t link to you, I had Jenl’s ice cream on the brain and it took my techy self way too long to do that many links!)

Abby made sure I didn’t forget about her- or she might kick my stretchy pants covered butt!

They are trying out a new add campaign and we got to preview it and comment and snack and all that good stuff. Best of all we get to customize a free T-shirt from a local vendor!! Definitely the best gimme! Anywho, there campaign is based on what Columbus doesn’t have. I am a bit leary of this ad concept. I get that we don’t have bragging rights to the Eiffel Tower, or the Alps. I don’t think anyone in the three hour radius (those who most visit for leisure) is looking for those things. I am guessing you would be coming here to visit family, you probably have kids..or you are coming here to shop or visit OSU. Most every city has a zoo, malls, possibly a science center, art museum etc…I think there ad should focus not only on what we do have but the oddities, off the beaten path, free, and different things Columbus has to offer.

Because I do not have three hours to type out a really great add for Columbus, I will just list some of our greatnesses!

1. The short North-try to visit the art district on the first Saturday evening of any month, year around and you will not only be entertained by the street performers, the open galleries and stores, many different eateries and bars, but by the people that attend. Some of the best people watching around. We are The Indie Arst Capitol of the World you know! And the short North will prove how serious Columbus takes its Art.

2. The Park of Roses-Come here anytime through out the summer and be amazed by the Award winning rose gardens. Or come in the winter and hope there is some snow!

3. In the summer you can check out either one of these great free water attractions with your kids: The Dancing Bunnies or Homestead Park. Now neither of these are in Columbus proper but really no matter where your staying, it is fairly easy to get around here. Especially is you aren’t in rush hour traffic. But if you want water and you want to stay in the city-there is not only shopping galore (for those with money to spend!) but there are also free fountains to play in at Easton . There are waterfalls to play in here in Columbus too. Did you know that?

4.We have great shopping!! Some of the best thrift stores are here! Village Discount, Ohio Thrift as well as several Salvation Army’s and Goodwills and Volunteers of America stores. Antique stores like crazy!

5. Music and Food. Where do I begin?? Every type of authentic ethnic food as well as American eateries can be found here. We have many vegan and vegetarian options also. Now as far as music-well I think we have another title there too-aren’t we like the best new up and coming talent, hot live music scene too?

Well I could go on and on, beleive me I have so much more, but this took me too long and maybe someday I will do an insiders scoop of Columbus on the cheap-with and with out kid activities. Or better yet maybe someone will PAY me for all my good info!

So in a nut shell – Come visit us! There’s lots to see and do both ordinary and extraordinary. If you are planning a trip to our fair city and your are looking for something to do-drop me an email and I can certainly point you in the right direction! I can be like your internet travel guide!!

Moooooooooooo from Cowtown. Go Bucks. O_H_I_O We have a little bit of EVERYTHING here! That’s my new add campaign :

COME TO COLUMBUS-WHERE THERE REALLY IS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING!

Well the garage sale is now just a memory! Saturday it rained until early afternoon. As soon as the skies cleared I ran outside to set up, when RockToWindAStringAround showed up to shop but ended up shuffling my goods from the living room floor to the front door step so I could feed the hungry shoppers! Sadly most of the goodies she eyed drove away with a starved shopper who left the buffet overstuffed and with a dogie bag!!! Thank goodness that guy bought as much as he did because about 1 hour later the skies opened up once more. So we tried again today and ended up selling a good bit of stuff. My pockets are full and my house clutter a bit lighter. We took all the leftovers to the thrift store drop box immediately after the sale so all’s well that ends well!! Here is the sun setting through the wet palstic tarps that were covering our treasures.

But because I am such a pack rat I got up at O too early hundred hour to shop at a Swap. We scored a Video Now player complete with a Sponge Bob movie! A bit of yarn, a couple of vases, some art books and a nice set of wooden bowls for our nature table. I love stuff!! Especially free stuff!!

After the sale was all cleaned up we were able to grant Ginger’s earlier this week wish for a bike ride. She is now big enough for the tandem and is loving it! While out in the park we saw a group of people dressing up and playing instruments. They were definitely a photo op!! After retrieving our cameras Molly and I combed the park looking for them but didn’t catch up with them until they were packed up and headed to their cars. But a few of them were nice enough to pose for a sorry old lady for a couple of shots.

Molly and I continued to trek around and take lots of photos.

And roll down hills!!

This is Birthday week at our house. Both Jake and Ginger have special days that are fast approaching. Must shop soon!!! Ugg, it’s a vicious cycle!
