Progress!!

Our addition is coming along stunningly!! Luckily the exciting and awesome part out weighs the stressful, never ending decision making part.

Today they finished framing the screen porch.

It’s got me dreaming of summer time!!!!!

The screen porch will eventually have screens(!) and french doors leading into the house (where the paper with the green writing is) and  double screen doors opening onto the deck . (the large opening on the left) The area to the right of the screen porch is the deck (minus the railing and decking at this point!)

This is coming in through the new garage into our new expansive and bright hall way! We picked out really awesome tile for this space. I am really excited about all the possibilities of this new entrance way! We mainly use our back door to enter and exit the house several times a day. I always hated walking into the house through that blue door into our tiny dank hall way. It was so depressing. So I wanted to make this new entrance like a front door. We ordered a really nice wood door with a full glass view. I might  paint this space orange or yellow or some other bright color!

Eventually we are going to have a really nice back yard too……I swear! In the mean time we might need to call for another dumpster!

The Seven Year Itch

I have always dreamed of putting an addition on our house. All the little things I loved about this house to make us buy it–I eventually came to hate. The chopped up rooms and tiny door ways, nooks and crannies. If you know me in real life, you know that my husband and I have talked about “the addition” for years-to the point where I am  sure our friends and family were sick of hearing it. We mention it almost every night at dinner when four of us eat around our table shoved against the wall and the fifth person sits alone at a different small table. And when we have extra dinner guests–which is more often than not—there is nowhere to sit. People always tend to gather in the kitchen-but if you are in my kitchen there is no doubt that you are just in the way. For years we have put off fixing things because of “the addition.” ” We are just going to remodel anyways”

Over the last few months we have met with our architect many times until the drawings were just what we wanted. We met with our builder several times so he knows just what we want. And….Well…. after seven and 11/12 years in our house finally “the addition” is underway!!!

IMG_1355

We have the most awesome labor! First Jake dug part of the 50 foot trench where the bobcat won’t be able to fit so that we can bury our electrical lines. Did you hear him mention that our soil is mostly clay and full of tree roots.

Next thing on the list was taking our stone patio wall down. This involved swinging a sledge hammer and and busting stuff up. A boys dream!!

IMG_1361

The girls helped with the relocation of all of the rocks (so we can re use them). This was not a parent approved part of the process. I looked out the kitchen window to see  them filling up a cart with the rocks, attaching it to the back of my car with a chain and Molly (who was more than happy to help!!) driving my car into the back yard with Jake making sure the cart didn’t ram my car.  My 12 year old driving around my back yard made me a little nervous I must add!

IMG_1359

Early Sunday morning to my neighbors dismay the jack hammer arrived.

DSC_8468

Actually my neighbors didn’t care at all (not yet anyways!). Word spread that we had a jack hammer and teens and men needed to try their hands at  the ultra, manly power tool. They got to play and we got a little help-win -win!

DSC_8476

Four to six inches of concrete is hard to bust up and heavy to move! Here is a flat on the trailer. But have no fear—more manly toys and tools!

DSC_8477 DSC_8478

This is just the start of the demo that we are doing before the real project starts. Which is scheduled to happen in just a few weeks. I am way overwhelmed with all of a sudden the need to pick out windows and siding and get everything out of the garage and order the dumpster……One would think in the almost 8 years that I have been thinking about this I would know what I want.  So many choices! That I will have to live with forever! Doh! No pressure there!

I will update frequently on the progress so stay tuned! If you have remodeled or put an addition on your house and have any need to know advice-please pass it on!

Our Holiday in Review

I absolutely love where we live. I also love tradition. I go out of my way to make sure we are making  memories together and carrying on family traditions. The 4th of July is one holiday steeped in tradition that  my kids really look forward to. Growing up, my parents always had a big 4th of July party–it started in the morning with everyone coming over for breakfast outside. Family came and went all day long. We swam and ate and then  moved the party into the garage in the evening. My dad and older cousins would blow off fire works in our back yard and a great time was had by all.

The apple must not fall too far from the tree.  We start each 4th of July at our Clintonville Community Breakfast. We walk over to the park early in the morning to begin our day.

It is the part of the day that is the calm before the storm. Because the next thing I remember– It looked more like this

This was before the fireworks show and the post fireworks snacking!! It was a late night. And today after cleaning all that up, I took a long nap–in the air conditioning. Hope your Holiday weekend was both fun and relaxing!!

Make Your Own Hula Hoop …. We Did!

IMG_4224

My two older kids learned how to hoop years ago. They have taken a few hooping classes and practiced on and off for years. They can do some tricks and walk around and keep the hoop up and going around effortlessly for hours.

hula hoops spinning practice

These photos are from a few years ago at circus practice. I on the other hand never could get the hang of hooping.  Even as a kid I just couldn’t get the hoop to stay up. It always looked so fun but I also felt self conscious that I couldn’t do it so I didn’t practice at it much. And just figured I was just someone who couldn’t hoop.

Now fast forward to  this year. One of the great things about the internet and blogs is being able to see how other people live. I have been loving the new wave of unschoolers that have taken their lives on the road.  I have been  living vicariously through these families whose blog updates I  anxiously await just to  see what “we” are up to in our customized RV!  I so wish we could pack up and go–live an adventure on the road. But alas-my family says NO!  So as I sit here and dream I notice that many of these women have taken up hooping. They look like they are having so much fun.

And then Sara posted this giveaway and I entered thinking Molly would love a new hoop. But as I began clicking around her post I found that Lara and Superhooper were taking their hoops on the road and heading towards Ohio. Without a second thought I contacted Lara and invited her to Columbus.  And with that I decided eff it I was going to learn to hoop.  I didn’t care if I looked foolish. For three days my kids tried to teach me. Nothing. I watched countless how to hoop videos on Youtube and even checked a hooping book and DVD out of our library. I was dreaming about hooping.  Then it happened!!! On day 5 finally I could keep the hoop up for a minute or two. And each day it gets easier and I don’t have to make such huge exaggerated movements to keep the hoop up anymore!!! YEAH for me!!

Ginger learned too. But she is learning much faster and is working on tricks already. She literally went from not being able to hoop at all to using 2 full size hoops in less than a day.

IMG_4153

One of our hoops broke and with 4 hoopers and being down to 1 hoop we needed more…we had to have more! So we went to Lowes and bought our supplies. (There are instructions and tips all over the internet.)

irrigation tubing  160 psi  3/4 inch

3/4 inch connectors

various colors of electrical tape and duct tape  (we found some metallic tape at a craft store.)

you will also need a hack saw and a blow dryer

Don’t be intimidated this is super easy

Measure your tubing –your hoop should come between your navel and your nipple.  The bigger the hoop the easier it is.  Mark it and cut it with a hack saw.

IMG_4176

Heat one end with the blow dryer to soften up the tubing so the connector fits in easier. This only takes a minute or two. Once it is warm shove the connector in half way.

IMG_4178 IMG_4182

The girls wanted their hoops to make noise so we added rice to the tube

IMG_4186

Next heat the other end and connect the tube together as close as you can get it. Then we wrapped a bit on electrical tape at this point to keep it together snugly.

IMG_4187

Next–decorate your hoop however you want using electrical tape and  duct tape. The duct tape is a little slippery and wrinkly for hooping so electrical tape is recommended but we used both.

IMG_4192

IMG_4193

IMG_4194

As soon as we finished we went and hooped in the dark in the back yard! There just isn’t enough room in the basement for three hoopers—unless we stand on the furniture!

IMG_4209

IMG_4215

Looks like we are set now! The white hoop in the front is actually an LED hoop that my husband made for Molly for Christmas a few years ago.  If you are local and are interested in joining us for free classes with Lara let me know!!! She will be here next weekend. Happy Hooping!!

What’s On My Strewing Table? Spring!

While I was out running the other day and listening to Sarah Parent’s podcast on Strewing (which I barely got into before my ipod died) I was trying to think of something good to strew this week. It was such a beautiful morning the sun was out, the wind was blowing and all the spring flowers and trees are in full color right now. The air smells so sweet. This wondrous time of Spring is so short. A few windy or rainy days and the flowers blow off of the trees and those Spring bulbs turn into green skeletons.  So I thought we should bring Spring inside this week.

DSC_9459

I wanted it to be more than just a small nature table–I wanted the sun, the wind, the sounds and smells of Spring. So I choose a sunny spot near the windows.  Ginger and I found lots of stuff just in our own yard to bring inside.  Flowers, leaves, nuts, pine cones, bark, sicks with fungus on them, seed pods, rocks, dried up daffodils, tulips etc…

DSC_9438

Then I rummaged through my basement and cupboards to find just the right containers to sort everything into. I think it’s important to take some time to think about how you are going to display your items. They certainly are more visually pleasing and inviting if you take a little time to display them in different ways. I don’t think this would have been nearly as appealing if I just left everything in a tubby on the table mixed together. Think trays, silverware sorters, tiny bowls and boxes, cigar boxes, egg cartons, vases.

Put your specimens under glass and  your immediately drawn to the little collection.

Add mirrors and you get more light and a whole new perspective!

I hear some of you want to play along with What’s On My Strewing Table?!  Excellent!! If you are strewing at your house and want to share, leave a link to your strewing post in the comments so we can all see what you got going on! I will try to post this regularly as a Friday Feature–but sometimes I might not get it posted until Sat. –Be patient with me!! Are you strewing this week????? Let us know about it!

Fairy Gardens

I would love to say I thought up this beautifully bright activity but I saw it here. I love this blog-I could spend hours looking through all the bright, sunny, beautiful photos.

Start with a shallow bowl or container (check the thrift store if you don’t have one).Cover the bottom with charcoal (pet store), then a layer of sphagnum moss (garden or craft store) top with potting soil.

DSC_9124 DSC_9127 DSC_9128

Next plant (sprinkle) easy seeds of your choice-grass, clover, chia, sprouts etc…  We used clover and Kentucky Blue Grass-of course we would choose this over Shade Turf-how boring! You can plant in a design or all over-you decide.

DSC_9130

We picked out a few little plants at the nursery but with the weather changing I bet you could dig a little something up in your back yard.

DSC_9132

Now on to the best part…..The decorating……colorful gravel, glitter, feathers, colored craft sticks, marbles, pretty rocks, anything that glitters

DSC_9148

DSC_9157

After planting spray with water frequently-keep moist-and wait for your garden to grow!  We can’t wait to see what our garden will look like when our grass and clover sprout.

On a final note-after I took these photos Ginger tripped and dumped my garden and part of Molly’s. But we tossed everything back in the pot and sprinkled a few more seeds on the top and another handful of gravel-all while breathing heavily. ugh accidents happen!
