Pepper Paints

DIY Puffy Paint

I had a few people ask about the homemade puffy paint recipe that I made for the Paint Like Dale Chihuly post.

Puffy Paint is super expensive to purchase–especially for a whole class. This DIY version is not meant for fabric but more for a paint that dries bumpy. It adds a little depth and texture to the work.

It’s cheap and easy to make. Equal parts salt, flour and hot water. Stir until dissolved. Add liquid or powder tempra. This potion is very forgiving. Add more water if too thick and add more salt and flour if it’s too thin –especially after adding the liquid tempra.

Pour or spoon mixture into squeeze bottles–I bought empty ketchup and mustard bottles. You want the consistency to be runny enough to squeeze out of the bottles with out splatting. Understand? You will once you start mixing. Think frosting–creamy frosting! You can even add a little glitter for some fabulous sparkle!

Cheap and Easy Homemade Cleaners

Spring is just around the corner (thank the heavens above)!!!! I love Spring cleaning. Strike that-I love my house when I am done Spring cleaning. I purge and scrub and always move things around for a fresh new look. I am not big on buying lots of cleaning supplies. They are super simple to make and I almost always have the ingredients on hand.

Here are two easy and cheap  homemade cleaners that contain no harmful chemicals and still smell good!

DSC_5341

Homemade Soft Scrub

Mix together

1/4 cup borax

1 cup baking soda

1 T biodegradable liquid soap (I use citrus castille)

Add enough water to make a pasty consistency

add 10 drops essential oils ( I like the smell of lemon and orange for cleaning)

If the scrub gets dry add a few more drops of water.

Anti-Bacterial Spray

To 1 cup white vinegar add

3 cups water

10 drops grapefruit seed extract

10 drops tea tree oil

1 teaspoon castille soap

10 to 20 drops lemon, lavender and/or orange essential oils

I am hoping to find my blogging mojo again. We are still creating messes all over the place–I promise to share more soon!!

Thursday’s Recipe – Witches Brew (homemade rootbeer + dry ice)

DSC_3665

oooooohhhhhh

Growing up my family had many traditions…things we we looked forward to doing over and over again. It is the same with my kids now.

Halloween included—most years. This started when Jake was 4. He had a Halloween party for several of his preschool friends and it sort of became an annual thing for us. But  because now we always travel in October, it is hard to fit in our family Halloween party every year. We always manage a night of pumpkin carving and seed roasting and some years we include a few games and surprises!

DSC_3679 DSC_3702

This year we had a few of our traditional games we play:

Bobbing for apples

DSC_3725

Catching a doughnut on a string

DSC_3751

GHOST (bingo)

But this year we added something new!

DSC_3662

Dry ice and homemade root beer. I found this idea in The Hungry Scientist. They don’t call it witches brew–they call it Uber-Bubbly Root Beer –I had to make it a little more festive! They have a recipe for lemonade too. As well as a good scientific explanation of what is happening.

1 gallon of hot water and a bucket or pitcher to put it in–note glass or plastic bottles can break from the stress of extreme temp changes–so no shaking or using irreplaceable containers. That’s why we used the popcorn bucket!

2 cups sugar

2 Tbs root beer extract (ours came from The Winemakers Shop up the street)

1 to 2 lbs dry ice (we got our at Grater’s Ice Cream)

DSC_3671

Add sugar to the hot water and stir to dissolve. Add the root beer extract—stir

DSC_3643

Using a long handled wooden spoon–to avoid frostbite- stir in 1 to 2 lbs of dry ice —–oooooooohhhhhhhh and prepare to be amazed!!

DSC_3650

A thick cloud of water vapor will form over the bucket

DSC_3651

DSC_3656

You will need to stir it every once in a while to keep it from freezing

DSC_3669

The majority of the fog will stop after about 15 minutes and then you can drink it!

DSC_3674

If you dare!

DSC_3678

Success!! It tasted good!

************** This was super fun and a little dangerous! So SAFETY DISCLAIMER INCLUDED!!!! *************************

Don’t touch the dry ice with your bare hands–watch your eyes if you chip it up—-don’t eat or drink any dry ice even if it is a small chip!! These are just a few good ideas—I am sure this doesn’t cover all the mishaps that could happen–Don’t say I didn’t warn you–be careful!

Or 50 slaps by the bloody hand!

Make your own Stickers

We are still here in case you were wondering!! I have been in a blogging slump and a cleaning slump and an organizational slump and well, you get the picture! But we did make some stickers the other day!

We cut out pictures from magazines …. but you could totally color your own.

IMG_5226

Then I mixed 4 Tablespoons of hot water with 2 Tablespoons of gelatin. I used unflavored (knox)… big mistake! They tasted too horrible to lick! So use flavored gelatin!! Stir until blended.

IMG_5232

We brushed the gelatin mixture onto the back of our pictures.

IMG_5236

Then let them dry for about a half an hour or more. Then we licked the backs and almost puked so we brushed some water on the backs and stuck them down.

Viola! Homemade stickers!

Thursday’s Recipe …. Green Popsicles

DSC_9577

Ginger wanted a popsicle for breakfast, a big homemade green one!

We have been slurrping down many a green smoothie lately and when there are some left overs  I fill up the popsicle molds with the extras. I know this isn’t rocket science. But it sure is tasty! This tropical flavor is by far the most requested morning smoothie and popsicle combination we make.

I fill half of  my vita-mix with spinach (packed down) add some fresh pineapple, a frozen banana and some frozen mango. Then I pour in a little bit-maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of coconut milk and a little water.

These make a nice tropical treat!
